Marionville, Mo. — The Marionville Comets completely dominated the Lockwood Tigers in the Class 1, District 2 semifinal game on Wednesday night, 61-20.

Marionville’s game plan was to score early and score often.  By doing so, they hoped to take advantage of Lockwood’s age and inexperience.

“We wanted to come out and have a big start in the first quarter because we were thinking that they are kind of a young team,” said Marionville head coach Jamie LaSalle.  “We thought if we got up on them early, maybe we could get them to give in a little bit.  I’ll tell you what, they never gave in; they did a great job.”

Marionville would score on their second play from scrimmage on a 52-yard touchdown run by sophomore Jacob LaSalle.  Lockwood senior Brent Chambers would then score on the Tigers’ first play from scrimmage when he busted open an 82-yard run, giving the Tigers their only lead of the night, 7-6.

Marionville would answer back quickly.  LaSalle would score his second of four touchdowns on the night from 45 yards out on the Comets’ fourth play of the night.  The game had five plays and three touchdowns.

LaSalle would score again from 11 yards out, and then when he completed a 24-yard touchdown pass to sophomore Lathan Kerans, the rout was on.

Lockwood would fight to stay in the game when freshman Kyle Bouldin returned a kickoff 84 yards to make the score 27-14.  Both teams combined for 41 points in the first quarter.

Marionville would keep scoring in the second quarter, including when senior Ryan White would score on a triple reverse from 62 yards. Lockwood couldn’t get anything going on offense and their defense had a hard time with the Comets’ offensive line.

“We made good blocks, our offensive line just dominated the whole game,” said Marionville senior Augie Gracia.  “Our backs ran the ball hard and never quit.  We controlled the tempo of the game and getting off to a quick score tonight was big.”

Marionville’s offensive line would continue to open holes and protect their quarterback, allowing for the Comets to continue scoring.  By halftime the score was 54-20.

The second half would see the junior varsity for Marionville come in to play after Ryan White scored on a 10-yard touchdown pass, putting the Comets ahead 61-20.

“This win is huge for us,” said White.  “This group of seniors, we haven’t really had good years since we’ve been in high school and this year means a lot to us.  It gives me goose bumps right now just talking about it.  We want to go ahead and win this district.”

“Offensive line is outstanding right now, they play hard and I’m proud of them,” said coach LaSalle.  “There’s a bunch of seniors on that offensive line and they deserve everything they’ve worked for.  Marionville hasn’t won a district championship since 2006.  We’ll be playing Jasper, an outstanding football team, very well coached, they don’t make mistakes.  It’s been a while since they’ve won a district championship, too, so it’s going to be a battle.”
