(Cleveland) (AP) – The United States men’s soccer team can begin preparations for its seventh consecutive World Cup appearance.

The Americans got in with a 2-0 shutout over Mexico and Panama’s 2-2 tie with Honduras.

Eddie Johnson broke the ice for the U.S. by scoring on a header in the 49th minute following Landon Donovan’s corner kick. Donovan capped the scoring in the 78th minute, giving the Americans their fourth straight 2-0 win over Mexico in Columbus.

The Yanks lead the North and Central American and Caribbean finals at 5-2-1 for 16 points, one ahead of Costa Rica. The U.S. took over the group lead with Costa Rica’s 1-1 tie at last-place Jamaica.
