Walter Edmond “Bill” Reed, 88, of Birch Tree, Missouri departed this life on March 23, 2014 at Mercy Hospital, Springfield, Missouri. He was born January 26, 1926 in Fremont, Missouri, the son of George Walter and Ora Effie (Brawley) Reed.

A Memorial Service will be at 2:00 p.m., Friday, March 28, at Yarber Mortuary, 621 E. Fifth St. Mountain View, MO 65548.

Bill was married to Shannon Joyce Klepzig in 1947 and the couple was blessed with three children – Gale, Gary and Beverly. After Shannon’s death in 2005, Bill married Edeltraud “Trudy” Carter and gained another daughter, Anna.

Bill served his country during World War II in the U.S. Army at the Battle of the Bulge. He was one of the original five founders of the American Legion Post 509. He also helped to organize the Birch Tree Fire Department and was the first Fire Chief. Bill was a barber for 62 plus years in Birch Tree and was always active in the community. He had a love of music and played the guitar and mandolin. Bill had many friends and was admired by all. He was a wonderful husband and father.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Shannon; four brothers, Howard, Clifford, Alvis “Chick”, and Boyd “Doc”; one sister, Lena Woodard; and one grandson, Travis Jon Reed.

Survivors include his wife, Trudy, of the home; two sons, Gale Reed and wife, Bonnie, of Yukon, OK and Gary Reed and wife, Cindy, of Herculaneum, MO; two daughters, Beverly Pelliccio of Springfield, MO and Anna Carter of West Plains, MO; one brother, Elvin Reed of Cedar Hill, MO; two sisters, Eula Mae “Sally” Smith of Bolivar, MO and Thelma Walters of Orville, CA; one sister-in-law, Jean Reed of Van Buren, MO; six grandchildren, Khristi, Stephanie, Brian, Angela, Elicia, and Melissa; nine great grandchildren, Selena, Hannah, Conner, Melissa, Chase, Bradley, Xavier, Isaiah, and Samantha; and several nieces and nephews.
