(West Plains) – The West Plains City Council unanimously rejected a proposed “smoke free” ordinance at their Monday meeting.
The ordinance, proposed by the group Breathe Easy West Plains, would ban smoking in indoor public places such as restaurants and bars. Councilman Mike Topliff spoke up during a discussion of the ordinance, saying that the city has a full section in their ordinances on alcohol, however, the no-smoking measure was very narrow, banning smoking tobacco but not addressing other forms of tobacco, such as chew.
The council voted 4-0 to defeat the measure. Councilman Royce Fugate was not present at the meeting.
The issue is not completely defeated, however, as the Breathe Easy Coalition can now take the issue to a vote of the people, something they previously said they planned on doing if the council did not pass the measure.
