(Thayer) – Sixty-five area residents learned how to make cheese last weekend at a cheese making class held Saturday and Sunday by Ozarks Self Reliance Living University, according to Deb Slack, heritage studies instructor with OSLU. The Saturday class in Thayer was held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, with 32 in attendance. The Sunday class was held at Next Step 7th Day Adventist Church, with 33 attending.
Students in the class also sampled homemade cream cheese flavored with peaches and pineapple and homemade yogurt and kefir, both flavored and unflavored. Jotz pointed out that while her cheeses are made with cow’s milk, many of the cheeses, kefir and yogurt can also be made with goat milk.
OSLU classes are free and held monthly covering a variety of heritage studies topics. Next month’s class will cover how to make bar bath soap and will be held Saturday December 1 from 1-3 PM at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Thayer and Sunday December 2 from 1-3 PM at Next Step 7th Day Adventist Church in West Plains.
