(Mountain Home) – The Baxter County Sheriff’s Office operated two locations during this past Saturday’s National Drug Take Back Event, and collected half of a ton of prescription medication.
Sheriff John Montgomery says that personnel with the Sheriff’s and Coroner’s Offices collected 1147.5 pounds of unwanted pills and medications from both collection locations at the Mountain Home Staples store and at the sheriff’s department building.
Montgomery says that this is net weight and does not include the weight of bottles or packaging.
All drugs collected during the event are incinerated by the DEA after collection. The collections are held to help keep prescription drugs from being flushed or thrown away, which in turn keeps drugs out of area waterways and ecosystems. Pills are disposed of in an environmentally safe manner.
