(Mountain Home) – An additional felony offense has been charged to a current Baxter County inmate.

28-year-old Elyssa Turner of Mountain Home was charged after the Sheriff’s Office investigated a child welfare complaint referred by the Office of the Prosecuting Attorney and the Arkansas Department of Human Services.

Turner gave birth to a baby boy January 20 at Baxter Regional Medical Center. Upon birth, doctors discovered that the infant was suffering from withdrawals from chronic drug abuse and was then treated for approximately 30 days in the hospital.

According to a report from the Baxter County Sheriff’s Department, Turner had tested positive for opiates and benzodiazepines. She admitted to state child welfare investigators that she had consumer Hydrocodone during her pregnancy without a prescription.

Sheriff’s Investigator Lt. Terry Johnson obtained a bench warrant for the arrest of Turner, which was served to her at the jail, with the charge of Introduction for Controlled Substance into the Body of Another a Class B felony. These charges will be added to a list of previous charges including Failure to Appear and Probation/Parole violations.

A $25,000 bond has been set with an appearance pending in Circuit Court, and she is also charged as a habitual offender.
